For a long time I avoided buying the American DVD versions of "For All Mankind" and Nova's "To the Moon" because my Pioneer DV-444 DVD player is Region 2. I recently bought a DVD recorder (Phillips DVD R75) and paid extra to get an all-region version. I then got the 2 DVDs from Amazon and, sure enough, they play perfectly on the DVD recorder in playback mode. Then, a few days ago, I absent-mindedly put "To the Moon" into the Pioneer DVD player, and it was only after watching half an hour of it that I realised that it was playing perfectly on a Region 2 machine. There is nothing on the DVD or its case to say that it is Region 1 only. Is it all-region?

I can't speak for the "To The Moon" release. But as a DVD producer, I will tell you that more and more the region coding, at least for special interest DVDs, is being ignored.

We have always done our encoding as Region 0 (which is open). When we went with Fox we met absolutely no resistance to this, which I thought might be an issue. The proliferation of open region DVD players has also made a difference.

When - as a European - buying DVD's in the US, one should pay attention to the formatting. US tapes are usually encoded as NTSC, while most European TV stations use PAL.

It would need a multi-coding DVD player AND a multi-coding TV set to see a US-made DVD in color. More and more of the machines do have multi-code facility, but it is worth checking, especially if you own older equipment.
