In November I had the pleasure of meeting NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation dinner honoring the 40th anniversary of Apollo 12. We chatted for a few minutes and I had a picture taken with him.

In February I had the picture enlarged to 8x10 and sent it Feb. 21 to him at NASA Headquarters with an attached letter. Last week I received the photo back signed:

To David-- Best wishes for joy and peace!
CF Bolden Jr 3-23-10
Bolden also signed the letter I sent, possibly to indicate that he had read the contents.

The photo came back with a form letter on NASA stationery stating:

As requested, a signed photograph of NASA Administrator Charles F. Bolden, Jr. is enclosed. Thanks for your interest in and support of our Nation's space program.

Please note that the photograph is intended for you, personally, and may not be sold nor used in any type of fund-raising activities.

Charlie Bolden is an exuberant and friendly guy whom I enjoyed meeting. The signed picture is a much-appreciated souvenir of our brief encounter.

Nice! He's very fond of "Best wishes for joy and peace!" -- twenty years ago, he inscribed something to me with that same inscription. (Two years before, the first time I met him, he used "Do your best!" -- and, believe me, I've tried ever since!)

The first time I met him, I was a starstruck, shy teenager, but he made me feel he was genuinely happy to meet me. When you're that young... wow. You never forget it!

I've written to him twice and haven't heard from him.

When I met Charlie here in in the UK shortly prior to him becoming NASA administrator, when he visited Bradford, he freely signed.

I have a brochure from the event and Charlie kindly signed the front of it with mission notations.

I know he is in a tough position right now, but I have to say, he is one of the best and one of the most humble people I have ever met associated with space and astronautics.

I really nice gentleman.

Bolden had stopped signing after leaving his job with this translation company and serving as a consultant from his home.

I have now received two photos signed by him from NASA Headquarters which I had sent in after him taking office. They are nicely signed and inscribed; the glossies, however, were subject to ionisation and the surface somewhat suffered from that.

I have a nice one that I got from him a little while ago which says "to David best wishes for success in all your future pursuits" (his name and the date). The date surprised me because it was a through the mail request. It also came with the NASA HQ letterhead that says not to sell it and that whole thing which I would never do anyway.

I had the pleasure of hosting administrator Bolden in Israel for 6 days. He signed the photograph of him as an astronaut:

"To Tal, Thanks for your hospitality during our visit to Israel! Shalom, XXX (Signature and date)

I met General Bolden at the Naval Aviation Symposium in 2008 at the Naval Aviation Museum. He signed all his crew lithos, portraits and some in flight photos for me. Then after we had lunch with him. He is a very nice man and we had a great time talking with him.

All times are CT (US)
