I wish to have several items signed through the mail by Alan Bean. Due to the fact that I have some specific requests, I would very much like to contact him and agree that these would be okay and of course the fee also, before posting the items form England.

I know that his details are in the addresses on the cS site but there seems to be no email contact there or via his website. I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bean a while ago - that was a real joy and I feel it is only polite to ask if the requests are okay and what the costs would be in advance.

Also I would love to hear about any news of through the mail experiences - how long it took?

Alan Bean was just as nice a guy through the mail as he is in person. I had an excellent experience sending him an item - very quick turnaround and very reasonable fee.

I would suggest you put your questions into a letter and mail them to Alan, perhaps providing your e-mail address for him to respond to if he desires.

Thanks to you Jonathan for your reply and also to you Robert for the sound advise... I guess to write in the first instance would be the best starting point.

My girlfriend came with me to the last Astronaut Scholarship Foundation show and she just loves Bean now; says that if she had a grandfather, she'd want Bean to be him.

As of June 2010, Alan Bean has updated his fees for providing autographs. Our resource guide has been updated accordingly, but for the sake of reference:
  • To sign (Alan Bean, Apollo 12) any photos or thin flat items: $150 each item + $25 for less than 10 words

  • To sign books, maps, baseballs, moon globes and other 3D items, $175 each item.

  • To sign covers or cards, $200 each item.

  • To sign Beta cloth patches or name tags, $300 each item.
All orders must included self-addressed and properly stamped return packaging. Bean can also provide an signed 8x10 photo for $200 total ($150 for the signature; $50 for the photo).

For international orders, there is an additional charge of $50 to provide for the added handling that is necessary.

Does anyone know if Alan Bean still signs through the mail and if so the rates he is charging?

On collectSPACE, click Resources and then look under autographs.

Alan Bean still signs through the mail for a fee.

Just wondering how long it usually takes to get an item back from Captain Bean? I'm not anxious, just curious if there's any timeframe I might expect an item back. thanks!

edit/update: I received an item back from bean about three weeks after I mailed it. during this time he was at spacefest, so all things considered I think that's a good turnaround. He also wrote a short note on the note I sent him, so I was very pleased with the whole thing.

Can anybody offer informed advice on how I may get a copy of "Apollo" by Alan Bean, signed by the man himself? Thanks in anticipation.

Rick, check the astronaut address section here. It gives an address and fees for sending material straight to Alan Bean.

I'd like to get Alan Bean to write a good moon quote at the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's show. Anyone know any?

I was going to get "We sailed to the Ocean of Storms" on it but wanted to see if anyone knew any good ones. Thanks.

Thanks for the help. The thought of asking him to write "I remember walking on the Moon" cracked me up quite a bit as just about the driest quote humanly possible.

I've found that Al comes up with far better inscription quotes than anything I could think of - almost every inscription I have from him is always original, imaginative, sincere, and often quite funny!

You can buy that quote on almost any photo. I have several myself. What I do when I want a Bean photo signed is I tell him to write what he remembers at the time when the photo was taken. The only time I asked for something specific was when I got Richard Gordon to sign a LM rendezvous photo. I asked Bean to write the story about how Pete let him (Bean) actually fly the LM. Bean was the only LMP to actually fly the LM. I thought that was a great story and I had to have it on a photo. He charged me $225 for that autograph.

Bean is as awesome with painting words as he is painting pictures. He comes up with some great insctiptions. If nothing else, talk to him about the photo until the two of you come up with something both of you can agree on. Whatever you do, be sure to get Bean on a 16 x 20 so he can really go to town. Even if you don't have room for it on your wall, it's worth having in your collection.

If you want an exact quote, you can always look through the Apollo 12 ALSJ site. I always read through the ALSJ before I get anything signed.

Lastly, don't forget to ask for date and mission information. I don't know why, but for some reason, that seems to be important to me. Maybe it will be to others as well.

Does anyone have any recent Captain Bean signing experiences?

I recently sent and item to have signed by Captain Bean per the instructions listed here to the address provided with a check for the autograph. This is my first time attempting to obtain an autograph via the mail. Can anyone here enlighten me on how the process typically plays out? What is a typical turnaround time, completely understanding these gentleman continue to keep busy schedules?

I was just curious. I have never sent such a large check not knowing if the process still works. Do I just leave the money in my account for an infinite length of time before I determine the item will not be returned signed?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Does Alan Bean generally sign and label Moonpans' photos for his base fee?

Just wanted to follow up to my recent question.

Captain Bean is an absolute fantastic gentleman to work with regarding signatures through the mail.

I recently sent off a piece that Captain Bean was concerned with. It was returned in 10 days. He graciously answered an additional question regarding my piece. He quickly responded once the concern was resolved and my piece was resent to him. It promptly arrived back signed in 9 days.

He was truly great and very gracious with his time. I deeply appreciate his offer to continue via the mail.
