I wish to have several items signed through the mail by Alan Bean. Due to the fact that I have some specific requests, I would very much like to contact him and agree that these would be okay and of course the fee also, before posting the items form England.

I know that his details are in the addresses on the cS site but there seems to be no email contact there or via his website. I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bean a while ago - that was a real joy and I feel it is only polite to ask if the requests are okay and what the costs would be in advance.

Also I would love to hear about any news of through the mail experiences - how long it took?

Alan Bean was just as nice a guy through the mail as he is in person. I had an excellent experience sending him an item - very quick turnaround and very reasonable fee.

I would suggest you put your questions into a letter and mail them to Alan, perhaps providing your e-mail address for him to respond to if he desires.

Thanks to you Jonathan for your reply and also to you Robert for the sound advise... I guess to write in the first instance would be the best starting point.

My girlfriend came with me to the last Astronaut Scholarship Foundation show and she just loves Bean now; says that if she had a grandfather, she'd want Bean to be him.

As of June 2010, Alan Bean has updated his fees for providing autographs. Our resource guide has been updated accordingly, but for the sake of reference:
  • To sign (Alan Bean, Apollo 12) any photos or thin flat items: $150 each item + $25 for less than 10 words

  • To sign books, maps, baseballs, moon globes and other 3D items, $175 each item.

  • To sign covers or cards, $200 each item.

  • To sign Beta cloth patches or name tags, $300 each item.
All orders must included self-addressed and properly stamped return packaging. Bean can also provide an signed 8x10 photo for $200 total ($150 for the signature; $50 for the photo).

For international orders, there is an additional charge of $50 to provide for the added handling that is necessary.

Does anyone know if Alan Bean still signs through the mail and if so the rates he is charging?

Is it still possible to pay Alan Bean to sign something through the mail and if so could someone please point me to where I find the address and the price? Thanks.

On collectSPACE, click Resources and then look under autographs.

Alan Bean still signs through the mail for a fee.

Just wondering how long it usually takes to get an item back from Captain Bean? I'm not anxious, just curious if there's any timeframe I might expect an item back. thanks!

edit/update: I received an item back from bean about three weeks after I mailed it. during this time he was at spacefest, so all things considered I think that's a good turnaround. He also wrote a short note on the note I sent him, so I was very pleased with the whole thing.

Robert touched on this above, but for Bean and others, when you have several items you want signed, perhaps mail [snail mail] a quick letter of introduction and request/description of items to be signed?

I have a few items, some already signed by Charles Conrad I'd like to get signed, hence my asking.

Thanks in advance.

Update: I sent Alan Bean a snail mail physical letter introducing myself, telling him I ran out of money at the ASF AAMS and had four items [beta cloths] for him to sign; told him I would send a return box with postage pre-paid. Sent last Wed. [09 November] with contact information.

Today [14 November] I got a voicemail from Mr. Bean saying everything in letter was OK and to send the items, along with the pen I wanted them signed with and where to sign them.

November 14 = Apollo 12 launch day. Nice to get that voicemail that day.

So, the physical letter of intent/introduction before sending things off was for me, a good thing.

MikeSpace: I am SUPER jealous! You can save the voicemail! for eternity!

I'd be totally gobsmacked if Alan Bean ever called me.

Update: Sent Alan Bean four items to sign on 15 November with a personal check, in today's [21 November] mail I received items signed exactly as requested.

I tried to make it as easy as possible, including a return bubblewrap type mailer, postage paid, addressed back to me, along with items so all that had to be done after he signed them was put in envelope, seal, and mail.

Very happy. Thank you Al!

Wow — six day turnaround is lightning quick! Almost beats my all time record of five days by the old Detroit Tigers HOF'er Charlie Gehringer over 20 years ago.

When I got Edgar Mitchell a few months back it was only 7 days, and he signed it exactly as I asked.

Its great that these guys at least give people the option to get something signed, and that they're so quick about it when you do pay them to sign something. A voice mail is above and beyond though!

Can anybody offer informed advice on how I may get a copy of "Apollo" by Alan Bean, signed by the man himself?

Is there an option to mail my book in to the ASF event in November?

Thanks in anticipation.

Rick, check the astronaut address section here. It gives an address and fees for sending material straight to Alan Bean.

All times are CT (US)
