I received my signed photos from Senator Glenn today! He personalized one for me and one for my daughter and I really appreciate his willingness to sign them for us!

I'm also thankful that I only waited a couple of months to get these back. I know a lot of cS users have been waiting a long time for their items. So, to have only been waiting since March is pretty awesome!

According to WBNS-TV (Ohio), Glenn is recuperating at his home in Columbus after surgery last month.
The 92-year-old underwent a heart valve replacement at the Cleveland Clinic in May.

Hank Wilson, spokesman for the OSU John Glenn School for Public Affairs, says Glenn is doing well and looks forward to celebrating his birthday on July 18.

Best wishes to Senator Glenn on a speedy recovery, and thanks for the reminder that I needed to send an email to thank the Senator and his assistant for their help and generosity in signing the item I sent.

I've been meaning to post a photo of my recently acquired signed photo from Senator Glenn, as per jonspace's request. Here it is:

Is anyone still waiting for a reply from Senator Glenn on any autograph request sent prior to August 2013?

I mailed him a copy of his autobiography in late July last year asking if he would sign it, and I'm still waiting. Given that no one has posted any recent successes, I'm beginning to lose hope.

Out of curiosity, how long is the current expected wait for John Glenn to sign and return a signature? I sent him an 8x10 photograph. It hasn't been very long, I'm just curious.

I know it varies depending on his schedule and availability, but was wondering what others' experiences were since Spring. Has everyone received their items from 2013?

Recognizing Senator Glenn is recovering from surgery, I suspect the wait will be longer than usual.

Does anyone have an email address for his secretary? I sent a litho several months ago, but since then the military forced me to move. I would like to try to update my return address so it doesn't get lost by USPS.

As I mentioned previously, I have now waited over a year to receive Senator Glenn's autobiography that I sent him with an SASE. I mailed his assistant a letter a couple of weeks ago asking if they still had my book. I haven't heard back from her either, but perhaps she's on vacation.

Obviously Senator Glenn has been most gracious to his multitude of fans and it's understandable that he is presently focused on his physcial recovery rather than answering fan mail, but I'm getting to the point where I'd just like my book back -- signed or unsigned.

Has anyone heard anything recently?

I haven't heard back and I've got a copy of his memoir and a copy of "We Seven" that I'd love to get signed.

I figured when I got them that they'd likely remain unsigned and I don't want to send them for naught, but if they're anticipating that he'll still be signing, I'd love to try.

This morning I received a signed photo of Senator Glenn during his flight in Friendship 7. It's safe to say I am a very happy collector today.

For information purposes I sent my photo, to Senator Glenn's address found here back in June when I was on holiday in Florida. While I can't say when the photo was signed the postage date on the parcel is 9-Jan-15.

I am very thankful that John Glenn is still willing to reach out to people in this way, and I'm amazed that he does so for free. I'd also like to say a huge thank you to Kathy Dancey who I believe handles all of the Senator's autograph requests.

Senator Glenn consistently caters to the requests from fans. I also recently received an autographed photo from his office in Ohio.

Seems that John Glenn is in a good condition. I also got a reply from him/his office on January 14th. I sent a letter with an autograph request on August 14th, 2014.

I know opinions on the topic may vary, but I am of the opinion that experienced collectors who obtained items from Glenn in the past should consider not writing to him anymore for autographs. This is for two reasons...
  • Glenn is well into his 90s now and he deserves a break from signing, so he can enjoy the most from his remaining years.
  • Any time that Glenn does devote to signing should be reserved only for newer collectors who don't already have his signature.
John Glenn has been most gracious with his time and generosity to collectors. I urge that we now show him kindness in return and not bother him with multiple autograph requests... especially if we already have items in our collection.

Agreed, and already my policy (as with quite a few other astronauts about fulfilled TTM requests) — precisely because it leaves time for newer enthusiasts.

I sent a letter and photo to Senator Glenn in July last year and I'm still hopeful of a reply, but if he decided to call time on signing autographs I certainly wouldn't blame him. I'll just keep my fingers crossed...

I am in the same boat. I sent a picture last spring and never heard back. At the time I did not know about his surgery. Since that time I moved across the country, so I am hopeful (or foolishly optimistic) that mail forwarding will work if Senator Glenn signs it. He has been so gracious in the past that I too would certainly understand if he takes a pause from signing.

I am planning on attending the ribbon cutting ceremony on April 24, 2015 in Columbus at Ohio State University with Senator Glenn. Do you think there will be a chance to get his autograph there?

I know he is good through the mail with autograph but how is he in person? Will he take a picture with me? Thanks for the help!

Given recent changes in Sen. Glenn's health, these questions are probably best put to the event organizers. The RSVP page provides contact information.

I received my photo signed by Senator Glenn today after around 9 months wait; as they say in Glaswegian parlance:

I was informed by another collector today that Senator Glenn has now had to cease from signing (due to his very limited office hours) and that any remaining unsigned material will be sent back to collectors.

It seemed apparent that this day would eventually come, especially with the recent news of Glenn's health problems. At this point, any letters sent to Glenn should only be letters of graditude and admiration. We owe him a lot of thanks for being so friendly to collectors over the years.

John Glenn is a gracious signer and a genuine gentleman. He has signed several things for me over the years. I was always upfront, declaring this was my second or third item but he signed without fail. Thanks to him I have an autographed model of his Mercury Capsule, as well as photos of him entering the capsule before launch.

I hold him in the highest regard!

I just attended an event this past Friday at Ohio State University where there was a ribbon cutting for the renamed John Glenn College of Public Affairs.

Senator Glenn was there with his wife Annie. He was one of the speakers and Annie cut the ribbon. He appears in good health but frail. He had assistance walking to and from the podium. After the event he was escorted right to a vehicle.

I saw that he kindly signed a helmet for one person and the body of a rocket for another but that was it and away he was driven off. He advised the two gentleman with the items that he couldn't guarantee the quality of the signatures.

I do concur that with his eyesight in poor condition and his frail health that he probably won't be signing much more and I believe that might have been his last public appearance.

I just met Senator Glenn at the Ribbon Cutting event Friday. As mentioned in the post before mine he signed a helmet for someone.

I was able to get a photo taken with him before he was rushed away in his car. I will treasure that photo always. I do not own a Glenn autograph, and I desire to have my copy of his book signed. Will he still sign it if I send it to Page Hall? Thanks!

As noted by Mark (mjanovec) above, Senator Glenn is no longer signing through the mail. Here is the message being returned by his office:
It has become necessary for Senator Glenn to discontinue his practice of signing photos and other memorabilia sent to him. It's not possible now to accommodate the significant number of requests due to his very limited office schedule. We are in the process of returning unsigned any items recently sent.

Alan, I think we were probably the last group to be lucky enough to receive a John Glenn signature. I got my Mercury photo back in February after only 4 months.

It is completely understandable why Senator Glenn has retired from signing and I wish him all the best for the future.

I will always treasure the autograph I received from him only a few months ago. But now I realise how fortunate I was to also be in, what is looking like, the last group to have items signed.

You're right — just in the nick of time!

I've just bought a copy of Senator Glenn's memoirs; really looking forward to reading it. He just seems to have made every day of his life count for something — and long may he continue!
