Folks,

In my ever continuing effort to get every space and aviation cover of "Life" magazine signed, I'm looking for the young Army Air Corp. Lt. Col. on the cover of the December 9, 1946 issue of "Life". He is listed as being Lt. Col. Donald Hillman, then 28 years of age. An internet search reveals nothing conclusive about his whereabouts, etc. It does appear that he went on to be the commander of the 94th fighter squadron and became a full bird Col.

Please email me if you know anything about the whereabouts of this unsung hero of aviation history. I'd like to ask him for his autograph if he isn't adverse to being bothered in his retirment. Any help is appreciated.

I am a also a big World War 2 aviation nut... Donald E. Hillman was the commanding officer of the 94th Fighter Squadron beginning on Aug 20, 1946. Don't know how long he was at that job. The 94th has a long history and is part of the 1st Fighter Group. The 1st has an active association. Suggest contacting them to see if they know where he is. Better hurry, if you aren't already too late. (1stfighter.com and 1st fighter.org)

Re: Donald Hillman. Interesting. I knew a Colonel Hillman 6th Bomb Wing commander at Walker AFB in Roswell in 1961. Lost track of Don after I left in 1964. Don was a big Judo fan and took part in AF tournaments in 15th Air Force and 47th Air Division. He was replaced I believe in 1963 by a Colonel Eddy at Roswell/Walker and the base was shut down in 1969. I'd hear Don was still around a few years back but have lost track since then.

Good luck with your search.

Joe,

Thanks for the well wishes but I am happy to report that I did find him and got my magazine signed. I also found a wonderful orgainization called Friends of the American Fighter Ace. It gives you an opportunity to meet the heros that have fought our nation's air battles. It was through them that I was able to find Col. Hillman.
