Anyone have an update on the signing or not of Joe Engle. I have sent two requests to him this year - with SAE for him to reply, but have had no response. Appreciate any info.

In person, Joe is a great guy and unassuming.

Geoff, he is a good signer. I sent him 2 items in march and it took about 4 weeks to get it back signed and inscribed as I requested.

Hate to be the odd one out but I sent Mr. Engle a couple of photos plus return envelopes and postage last year and am still waiting for a reply. perhaps I should try again?

...same here. I, too, sent items off about a year ago, never to be seen again.

I just got a reply from him today. Turnaround time was only 13 days, but he only signed one of the two photos I sent.

I too sent a photo 6 months ago and about a year ago... both included FedEx return provisions and also haven't got anything back yet. I thought I heard somewhere that he cut down on signing?

Is anyone planning to attend the EAA air show at Oshkosh this year?

I have an STS-2 photo signed by Dick Truly, and I would really like to add Joe Engle if possible. Gen Engle is scheduled to be there, and I would be eternally grateful if someone who is attending would be willing to attempt to get the photo signed for me!

Joe Engle's hometown of Chapman, Kansas, got leveled pretty bad by a Tornado this past week. Chapman High School was totally destroyed. One young girl lost her life. There is much rebuilding to do. Maybe it is possible that Joe would do a signing with all proceeds going to families trying to rebuild. I don't know how this could be arranged but I know that Joe does care about Chapman because he was just there a couple years ago to dedicate a structure. Just something to think about.

I originally posted this in 2003 - wondered if there was an update as to whether he can be contacted through the post and still signs. I am in UK which may stop him signing.

He no longer signs items sent to him through the mail. I've heard he will gladly sign for you in person, if you have a chance to meet him someday. However, even that can change if there are people out there that abuse his kindness.

He signed freely at a recent space conference in the UK, but he did ask me, "You're not going to sell these on eBay are you?" which is a fair question (to which the answer was/is no)!

If you get a chance to meet Joe, take it. His enthusiastic talk on the X-15/ALT was outstanding and one of the best I've heard.

I met him for the first time on July 18th of this year at the National Aviation Hall of Fame reception and dinner in Dayton Ohio. He gladly signed 2 photos for me and posed for a picture with me. I saw him sign items for 2 other collectors also. He was as nice as can be.

Does anyone know if Dick Truly and / or Joe Engle still signs through the mail?

I like to send an STS-2 shot to be signed.

Yes to Truly; still no to Engle.

I understand that he was reluctant to sign at a recent event as well - probably because he is sensitive to commercialisation.

I think the best place to have him sign is at the Edwards AFB airshow. He is always very kind there and signed a few items for me. He even asked if I wanted more items signed.

He is bound to be more responsive to someone who is in the military (and plainly wears/displays that evidence in front of him).

Whereas, he was less willing to sign items at the recent Gathering of Eagles...and apparently was the one who insisted on a "no autograph" policy for the event (at least on items brought in by collectors). Those who saw him that weekend that were lucky enough to get a signature said he was somewhat reluctant to sign and only signed one item per person.

So it appears that the commercialization of his autograph by certain wannabe dealers has ruined yet another opportunity for collectors.

I hope Engle someday decides to do an organized mail-in signing with the ASF, Novaspace, or the Flight Test Historical Foundation. As both a shuttle commander and an X-15 pilot, his signature is still in quite a bit of demand. While Engle probably doesn't want/need the money, it would be a good fund raising opportunity for him to help support his favorite organizations.

I wrote to Joe Engle in 1981 and 1985 and he replyed very well to both occasions. I recently sent him an item through the mail and still haven't had any reply. I did meet Joe Engle in 2007 and he was very willing and great about autographing my items. Thank you.

Does anyone have any more recent signing experience with Joe Engle than 2009 to report? I see that he will be in Oshkosh, WI later this month, so I was going to see if anyone would be attending either day he is there that would be willing to get a photo signed for me, but if he doesn't readily sign at events like this, I won't make the effort. Thanks!

No, other than at the Discovery-Enterprise transfer event, Engle said he couldn't sign because he had to catch his ride (which was true). He did shake hands with people before he rushed off, which was nice.

Engle was also at the Enteprise Pavilion opening on the Intrepid but I didn't catch him then.

Last year he returned a photo with the suggestion I look on eBay for an autographed picture. He said he no longer signs.

Okay, I respect his prerogative to no longer sign. Thank you for the replies.
