I'm considering paying my first fee for an astronaut autograph (Alan Bean) and I'm wondering what the etiquette is for sending such a request. Should you write to them first and confirm things such as the fee and who the check is made out to? Or should I just go ahead and send my check and SASE with my photo?

Thanks for any guidance.

Hi Tim:

You can just send it, packaged very safely (including your return packaging), along with the latest fee and a letter of greeting requesting how and where on your photo you would like for him to sign.

If for some reason the fee has changed, he'll usually let you know either by letter or he'll request you send him the difference in good faith. He's a good man, and I never minded the fee, because I know it helps buy art supplies for his ongoing artwork.

I've had over a dozen exchanges with him since 1997 and have never had even the slightest difficulty. Capt. Bean is a gentleman. You're in good hands.

Best-

Rob

I agree. Bean is reliable. He won't sit on your item for days or weeks or lose it. Conrad's secretary once told me that Conrad chose Bean because he was so reliable. He told her, "I'd trust my life to Al Bean." And he's obviously still that way today.

You may want to tell Bean what color marker you want used as well. I had sent him two items seperatly months apart. The first was an on the moon b/w photo which he autographed in black and the second was his wss portrait which he autographed in blue. I was disapointed he used a blue marker on this photo as it doesn't show up very well at all.

Marker color is a good point. The photo I have to send is a fairly dark one of him by the LM. I was thinking of sending along a gold marker for him to use (securely packaged to prevent explosions and disasters of course). Is it OK to send along the type of pen you'd like to use. I don't want to presume that he has the color I would want.

Not only is it considerate, but a very polite and thoughtful thing to do. In my experience they don't mind at all.
