I am sure that this question pops up more and more with regard to paper collectables ie autographs, What is the best way to save these items with regard to deterioration, and also with regard to security( as these items get more valuable the means to protect them must be taken into consideration). Is a safe a good way to preserve them? |

FYI -- Kim Poor wrote on this topic in his collectSPACE article "The Mythos of Lithos": http://collectspace.com/resources/autographs_lithosmythos.html |

thanks Robert. I was also interested in the security factor ie a safe to keep these items in are they good protective devices ie. humidity and air flow/circulation? |

Sleepman, I do something that is probably not ethical to the viewer of my collection, but I know my collection is safe. I make copies of all of my cherishable photos I display on my office walls and put the originals in a fireproof safe hidden in a secret place. That way, if someone breaks in, they will steal a $5.00 photo instead of a $2000.00 autographed shot of Neil Armstrong!! I have no intention of reselling those because if you are a true collector, you'll know it's a copy. That's just my way of making sure they're all safe.
Anyone else?

Ditto Lawdog....I scan the original and display the copy. My only problem is I haven't yet purchased the high dollar fire proof safe to stash the original. aloha, Dave

Sounds like what I do as well. Alot of what I have on the walls are copies of the original. Most people can't tell the difference. And I'm happy with knowing the real stuff is safe. ( And in a fireproof safe too )From The Last Frontier......... Mike

Sleepman,If you really want to go "Cadillac style" and you have lots of precious items then I would go for a gun vault which is usually between $800.00 to $1500.00 (not sure, just guessing) they are made to withstand the usual moisture because they have to keep guns from rusting. However, a little open bag of rice wouldn't hurt!! PS: Not to advertise for anyone but my safe is made by "Sentry" Hope this helps!!!
