On a recent tour of Johnson Space Center, not far from the Mission Control Center, I saw a neglected mockup of a Gemini spacecraft beside an old Airstream trailer. I wonder what the story on that was. |

The Gemini is an empty shell that was made by Guard Lee for display atop the original Gemini-Titan that stood in the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex's Rocket Garden. In 2010, the visitor complex upgraded their Gemini-Titan with a more authentic example, and the original booster was moved to Johnson Space Center for display. Once in Houston, though, it was discovered that the rocket was full of asbestos, complicating (and greatly increasing the cost of) its restoration. With its addition to Rocket Park on hold, the Gemini capsule (with a fresh coat of paint) was moved to the lawn in front of buildings 56 and 57, collectively known as "1958," which serve as a collaborative work space for JSC employees. | |
