A trio of new monuments at NASA's home for human spaceflight pays tribute to the flight control teams of the past by inviting visitors to sit down and reflect on what was made possible from inside the Mission Control Center in Houston.
...NASA officials and members of the Manned Spaceflight Operations Association (MSOA) on Thursday (April 28) dedicated three black granite benches — one for each for the teams behind the Gemini and Apollo programs; the Skylab flights and Apollo-Soyuz Test Project; and the space shuttle missions. The MSOA privately funded the benches with donations from 98 of the non-profit organization's members.

On a tour of the Johnson Space Center just a few weeks ago I saw those benches and they immediately caught my eye. There are very handsome so much so that I didn’t want to put my butt on them. It just didn’t seem right.

Last I checked, Houston is a hot and predominantly sunny spot. Putting one's fanny on black granite during the summer months seems like an unpleasant experience to me. In my opinion, the should have used some lighter colored stone, there is after all white granite too.
