collectSPACE Mercury capsule exhibit to preview Cosmosphere satellite locationThe historic capsule that carried the second American to fly into space is set to land in the second most populous city in Kansas in early 2019. "Liberty Bell 7," the Mercury spacecraft that was piloted by NASA astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom on a 1961 suborbital spaceflight, will be the early centerpiece of a new exhibit by Cosmosphere Innovation Space at Bluhawk in Overland Park. |

Researching this a bit further, it is unclear how long Liberty Bell 7 will be on exhibit in Overland Park. When I spoke to Cosmosphere staff a few months ago, it seemed Liberty Bell 7 would stay permanently in Hutchinson once the renovations were complete. |

Per the Cosmosphere today, Liberty Bell 7 will be at Bluhawk beginning in February 2019 for two to three months. At the end of its run, the capsule's exhibit will be replaced in Overland Park by one devoted to Mission Control (as mentioned in the article). |

Excellent! Thanks Robert. I thought it would be added on to the Liberty Bell 7. Hopefully you can make it out here once it opens! There are a few of us that haven't seen you in well over a decade. |

Cosmosphere release Cosmosphere Satellite Withdrawn from Overland Park DevelopmentAfter careful evaluation, the Cosmosphere is no longer considering a satellite location at Bluhawk in Overland Park, KS. Initially part of the original development, the Cosmosphere satellite facility is no longer part of a revised Bluhawk project plan. The revised project plan is based on the removal of Cosmosphere from the project, a move that was made in full collaboration with Cosmosphere's management and with its full support. The Price Brothers and Cosmosphere teams mutually and carefully evaluated recently available information and concluded that a multi-attraction approach for Bluhawk was not in the best interest of the project or Cosmosphere at this time. The Price organization looks forward to helping Cosmosphere evaluate other opportunities that could bring this significant Kansas asset to the Kansas City metro area. "We worked very closely with Bluhawk to evaluate our plans and we concur with its decision to move forward without Cosmosphere as part of the project," Jim Remar, President & CEO, Cosmosphere. "The Cosmosphere team wishes Bluhawk success and strongly believes it will be a terrific asset to the region." The Liberty Bell 7, which is a spacecraft that is part of the Cosmosphere's collection, was scheduled to be on display in a retail space at Bluhawk in February. That exhibit will not take place. "We are actively seeking opportunities for an exhibit featuring LB7," Remar said. "We will also continue to seek opportunities for a satellite location for the Cosmosphere. The interest shown by the Greater Kansas City Metro Area in having a satellite location is evidence that can be a great channel for the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson to give people who have never heard of our community or our museum a taste of the programs. It is also a great platform for our Science Educators to offer more STEM education programming and outreach." |

This doesn't surprise me. I am unsure what is keeping the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas; the town is in real decay and is dying. Logistically, the Cosmosphere would thrive if it were moved closer to Kansas City. A satellite location would have proven that and the area they picked would have made a huge impact for the school districts nearby (I live super close to it). While their space camp does have a national (maybe even worldwide) reach, having the Kansas City International airport close by with better hotel accommodations could potentially make it eclipse the Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. | |
