The Texas African American History Memorial, honoring the contributions of African-Americans to Texas history, was dedicated on the south lawn of the Texas Capitol in Austin on Nov. 19, 2016.

It is only the second memorial dedicated to a specific ethnic group on the statehouse grounds, after the Tejano Monument, devoted to Mexican-American history in Texas.

Relevant to this site's focus, the monument prominently features an astronaut, and was sculpted by Ed Dwight, who before becoming an artist was a test pilot who was billed by the media in the 1960s as the "first African American astronaut trainee."
