For those who have gone, what is Family Day at the National Air and Space Museum, particularly at the Udvar-Hazy Center like? Aside from the panels, looking to see what they have for the younger kids to do. My daughter may be too young, but at least she'll get to experience a museum like my parents did with us. |

I visited the National Air and Space Museum along with two cS friends this past week (not during Family Days). The exhibits are truly spectacular! But we were equally impressed by the docents. They are very knowledgeable, and many have first hand knowledge and experience of the artifacts. But it was their passion and willingness to spend time with us that left us speechless. With a bit of modesty clearly we knew more about the artifacts and their history than the average visitor, and once the docents discovered our level of interest they went out of their way to accommodate us. Following one one and a half hour group tour, we continued to talk to the docent, and three hours later we were all exhausted from our personal extended tour. On several occasions we just struck up a conversation with a docent and ended up spending hours with them. Several times docents tracked us down to make sure that we connected with another docent who had specific knowledge that he knew we would be interested in. To add icing to the cake, I found my edition of Air&Space Magazine when I arrived home. On page 15 there is a wonderful article by Tom Jones on Flak-Bait, a B-26 Marauder, which we saw being restored at Udvar-Hazy. If you don't subscribe to the magazine I suggest you pick up a copy of the May edition. In addition to Tom's informative and well written article the edition is chock full of other stories on WWII aircraft. | |
