A pedestrian walkway dedicated to space pioneers Yuri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong opened in Houston on Friday (Dec. 12), Sputnik International reports. The green pedestrian area is lined with over 200 young oak trees, planted two years ago, and features two granite plates with commemorative plaques dedicated to the two space pioneers. The green territory is located in Houston’s East Downtown (EaDo) area....the project was organized with the financial assistance of the Kindness Without Limits charitable organization, and the Russkiy Mir foundation, and supported by EaDo's executive director Anton Sinkewich, who supported the project before the city authorities. According to Kindness Without Limits, the walkway is located at the intersection of Bastrop and McKinney streets and is part of the Houston International Promenade under development. This is at least the second tribute to Gagarin in Houston. In 2012, a 9-foot bronze statue of the cosmonaut and an 8-and-a-half-foot panel featuring astronaut John Glenn were unveiled at the city's Parks Department headquarters, which served as NASA's original headquarters in Houston. |

It doesn't seem so. Armstrong's visit to the Soviet Union was in 1970, two years after Gagarin's death. (Related topic: Did Yuri Gagarin ever meet a U.S. astronaut?) | |
