Perched atop a modified Boeing 747, Space Shuttle Endeavour departed Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 4:22 a.m. EDT Wednesday, September 19, 2012, en route to Houston, the first leg of a two-day trek to California.

Love the wingtip vortices coming off of the 747. That doesn’t look like a photo taken at 4:22 in the morning, though.

Here is an image of the taxi run before takeoff, so it looks like the time could be correct.

Astronomical dawn did not occur on this date until 5:51 a.m.. Astronomical dawn is defined as the time at which the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon, and the first faintest light is visible at the horizon in areas without any light pollution. Therefore it was totally dark at 4:22.

Perhaps the time was quoted in PDT, which would make the lighting possible.

That’s it. Take-off was originally planned for sunrise on the 17th. In the end they were delayed and got airborne at 07:22 EDT (11:22 GMT) on Wednesday the 19th.
