Skylab 2 astronauts (l-r) Conrad, Weitz and Kerwin wave to the crowds during a parade for all three Skylab crews in Chicago in late March 1974. Seated in front of them is Mayor Richard Daley.

Nice picture! Love that car too.

I used to live near Chicago and was totally unaware of any parade for the first Skylab astronauts. It may not have been well publicized, which would be a surprise considering Mayor Daley loved these celebrations.

I thought it might be possible that they were part of the St. Patrick's Day parade, but I see no green anywhere. Besides, Daley would have been leading that parade on foot.

I don't think it was well publicized. Look at the size of the people in the background.

You're right about the car. I'd like to know the make and year.

Looks like a "modern built" classic and six of these cars were used, Three for the crews and three for the wives of the nine astronauts.

Probably a well-known car club in Chicago...

Pretty sure the car is a Duesenberg, likely a 1929 model. This fancy car was introduced just in time for the Great Depression, and may have spawned the popular old expression for something extraordinary, "It's a duesy!"

Isn’t it an Excalibur?

Yes, the car is an Excalibur Series II made from 1970 to 1974.

The design of the body was based of the 1928 Mercedes-Benz SSK.

All times are CT (US)
