Mercury-Atlas 7 pilot Deke Slayton pauses at the entrance to the altitude chamber in Hangar S at Cape Canaveral, where he will enter his Mercury spacecraft for a test. This photo was taken in early 1962, before Slayton was removed from the flight in March of that year and replaced by Scott Carpenter. |

As Mike Collins put it about Deke in Carrying The Fire: "Should have flown to the moon and back many times."One has to wonder how different the crew selection process would have been if Deke hadn't been grounded, and someone else had been in charge. |

This is one of the few times NASA made a mistake. Deke should have flown in Mercury, Gemini and an early Apollo flight. |
