Crewmembers for the third Spacelab Mission Development Test (SMD III) at the Johnson Space Center, held from May 17-24, 1977, were (front to back) Dr. Carter Alexander of JSC, Dr. Bill Williams of Ames Research Center and astronaut Dr. William Thornton. SMD III was the third in a series of ground-based studies designed to test logistics and management procedures for future life sciences space experiments. The crew of three conducted 26 experiments and 12 operational tests during the seven day simulation. Thornton was mission specialist and Alexander and Williams payload specialists. |

As a bonus, here is a design and the final version of the SMD III mission patch. Four research monkeys were aboard for the simulation. The crew named one monkey King Kong and another Farrah Fawcett-Majors. |

And 8 years later Thornton would be on the Spacelab 3 flight with monkeys on it. |

You'll have to ask the crew. It was reported in Aviation Week at the time, without an explanation. |

Dr. Bill Williams was selected on January 9, 1984 as one of four candidate payload specialists for STS-61D / Spacelab 4 scheduled for 1986. The mission was canceled after the Challenger disaster. Ultimately, this flight took place in June 1991 on STS-40 / Spacelab Life Sciences-1. However, Williams had already resigned in late 1984 for personal reasons. |
