An interesting 1971 Boeing publicity photo of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, which made its debut on Apollo 15. Obviously those were different times.

Great photo Ed. Thank you. This makes you realise the actual scale of the rover, a lot bigger than you think. You get used to seeing them with suited astronauts which changes your sense of scale.

Ed, thank you for posting this image, it shows some detail that I have not seen before. The hardware used to mount the rover to the walking hinge is installed on the rover in this shot.

There are other images that show this from side view, and some images of the hardware discarded on the lunar surface, but this shot is unique. Do you have a better resolution version of this image that you could share?

If you can locate the series Moon Machines there is a whole episode on the development of the lunar rover that includes the original designers, and the scale model they built to come up with the ingenious folding mechanism which allowed it to be deployed from the LM.

At one time, they held a meeting with von Braun and when the door was opened to his office, they drove this little RC model through to introduce it to him!

This Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation document has interesting information on the LRV. On page 69 is an alternate photo with information on the passenger.

All times are CT (US)
