This photo was taken on February 15, 2008, and shows Space Shuttle Atlantis while it is docked to the International Space Station. Steve Frick, STS-122 commander, is recognizable at right. Looking on is Alan Poindexter, pilot.

Is it a photographic illusion or was "Atlantis" really curved?

The surface is curved, but this is not apparent if you are not looking at the writing from above or below. Try writing straight on a piece of paper, then pick it up and bend it.
