Vibration testing of Apollo command module couches at the Manned Spacecraft Center's vibration and acoustic test facility, Building 49, in April 1968. Objective was to determine the reaction of astronauts to the severe vertical oscillations recorded on Apollo-6. Astronaut Gordon Cooper is in the CDR seat, the remaining two seats are occupied by instrumented dummies. |

Thanks as always for posting. Interesting pic of Gordon Cooper. I was disappointed that he never got to fly Apollo... |

Cooper was certainly a trooper. Two backup crew assignments in a row without getting another flight. Human test subject. Head of the AAP branch of the Astronaut Office back when it was still a concept. I can't imagine Wally Schirra or any of the other Original 7 doing any of that. |

Not to mention, two VERY successful spaceflights under his belt!

On one hand, these are jobs you would expect to give to rookies (like the SMEAT crew), on the other maybe Deke trusted Gordo to do the job. Perhaps he should have been on the Apollo 7 crew. |

As Mike Collins put it about Cooper in Carrying The Fire: "Did a great job on Mercury, not bad on Gemini, but Apollo seemed too much." I assume he was referring to Cooper's training ethic and thoroughness. He was obviously willing to take on any assignment he was asked to do. He strikes me as a "kick the tires and light the fire" kind of pilot, not a systematic preparation fanatic like Borman or McDivitt. |

Excellent rare photo, as always. Thanks, Ed!By the way, I've seen the photos of Gordo in an early Apollo suit, and in the Spacecraft Films' video of Apollo 10. Have you come up with any still photos of Gordo in the Apollo 10 suit, or in the LM or LM sim? |
