A photo of astronaut Al Worden during helicopter training in March 1967. Worden, who flew as command module pilot on Apollo 15 in 1971, died this week.

So, Al Worden in helicopter training? Wasn't he always in the CMP camp? He certainly was in mid-1969 as backup on the Apollo 12 crew. Was he ever a potential LMP?

Very sad news about Al but this photo is obviously very appropriate.

I vaguely recall that they all got basic helicopter training before crew assignments started to crystallize.

Nice choice of photo.

Keep in mind that in Deke's assignment rotation system, CMPs rotated into CDR positions down the line. Also, some astronauts weren't locked into being CMP or LMP even though they might be focusing on one vehicle or the other.

If I recall reading somewhere, Charlie Duke mentioned that he heard through the grapevine that he was in line for a CMP position before he was assigned as LMP (backup on Apollo 13). So apparently nothing was set in stone.

A very appropriate choice for this week Ed. A very popular astronaut amongst us space enthusiasts.

If I recall correctly, the original Apollo 13 back up crew was Young, Duke and Cernan, until Cernan declined the LMP role.
