A series of news briefings on Project Apollo was held at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston December 15-16, 1966. The Apollo 1 prime and backup crews are, from right: Gus Grissom, prime command pilot; Ed White, prime senior pilot; Roger Chaffee, prime pilot; Wally Schirra, backup command pilot; Donn Eisele, backup senior pilot; Walt Cunningham, backup pilot. At left is Director of Flight Crew Operations Deke Slayton.

Must have been one of those "Is the space program actually worth taxpayer dollars?" questions.

Thanks, Ed... never saw that photo before. They do seem somber.

Wally was probably still ticked off about being assigned to a backup crew.

Just under six weeks before the fire.

By this point Gus was fed up with the condition of their vehicle and he and his crew had been vocal about it on numerous occasions.

While Wally certainly wasn't happy about the Apollo 2 mission, as he saw it as a needless duplication of the first flight; he too had been kept in the loop by Grissom and wasn't at all liking what he was hearing and seeing.

While all of that may be true, we may be reading too much into this particular photo.

We don't know at what point during the press conference this photo was taken. Were they being asked a somber question? Were they just listening intently to someone setting up their question? There are lots of reasons why, in that one moment, they may have all been serious, whereas a few seconds later could have been smiling or laughing.

Looks like all their faces are pointed at the same place. Probably listening intently at the next question.

There's an audio of that conference somewhere. I remember Grissom talking about the new addition of astronaut support crews to the mission, how that was beneficial to their preparation for the mission, and specifically mentioning Evans, Givens and Swigert as the Apollo 1 support crew.

Anyone know the scale of that large CSM model in the background?

I think that may be a projected image on a screen.

As this photo shows, it was a physical model. Maybe 1:4 scale?

Super rough guess here, particularly since, in the photo, we cannot see the model below the astronauts' waistlines.

So if Block 2* CSM is roughly 36 feet long and the model is roughly 6 feet high. Scale is 1/6.

* I don't know length of Block 1 CSM.

All times are CT (US)
