Astronauts Buzz Aldrin (left) and Ted Freeman are seen at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston during a demonstration of the Gemini Mission Simulator for the press on 30th October 1964. Freeman died in an aircraft accident the day after this photo was taken.

Ed, I spent an unusually long time taking in this image and your thoughtful words. A lot of gravitas to that photo.

Very sad indeed but thank you.

One can only wonder what kind of career as an astronaut Freeman would have had.

Early Gemini flight assignments showed Ted Freeman as back-up pilot on Gemini 9 with Tom Stafford...ultimately flying on Gemini 12.

Maybe he would have followed the path that Gene Cernan found himself on after being paired with Stafford.
  • Pilot Gemini 9A.
  • LMP Apollo 10.
  • CDR Apollo 17 landing at Taurus Littrow with Schmitt.

  • Stafford, Freeman
  • Stafford, Young, Freeman
  • Freeman, Evans, Schmitt
And maybe he'd still be alive today. Makes you want to somehow get word to him on the day of this pic "Take the day off tomorrow. Mow the lawn and spend time with your wife and daughter. Don't go flying."
