Actually that Apollo 2 mission was canceled prior to the Apollo 1 fire, in late 1966. Schirra, Eisele and Cunningham were reassigned as backup crew for Apollo 1.Cool pic. |

You are right, of course. I meant to say that after the fire there would be no manned Apollo 2 or 3, for which crews had already been selected before the fire. |

It's a matter of historical record that Wally Schirra thought that mission was an unnecessary repeat of Apollo 1 and was quite vocal with his opinion. His face kind of says it all. |

Were these engineers from MIT Draper Labs? I used to sell them CNC machines in the 1980's. |

It's always nice to see the "people behind the scenes" of the space program. |

As LMP. Of course, he was informally offered command of Apollo 17 in late 1969/early 1970 but turned it down. |

The flight crew for the Apollo 2 mission (second manned Apollo flight) were first named on Sept. 29, 1966. Apollo 2 had been planned as an open-ended Earth orbital mission up to 14 days with increased emphasis on scientific experiments as well as the repeating of some activities from the first manned flight. Apparently Schirra did prevail with his argument in November 1966 of not flying Apollo 2 at all, with top NASA management approving Apollo 2's cancellation altogether. |

Actually Collins wrote in his autobiography that he was offered (and declined) the 17 CDR slot prior to Apollo 11 when he and Slayton were both flying back to Houston from a training session at the Cape. He had in fact already decided to retire; but wasn't going to release the news until after the flight. |

As Collins wrote in "Carrying The Fire," he was "promoted" (the quote marks were his) from LMP to CMP after the cancellation of Apollo 2. And Deke Slayton in "Deke" stated that he considered Borman, Stafford and Collins a potential lunar landing crew. |
