Half a century ago this week, Apollo 7 commander Wally Schirra released a raccoon tail from a box which he told newsmen contained a mongoose. The reporters were covering the crew's return to Houston on October 26, 1968. Schirra told them how dangerous the animal was. When they came closer for a look he tripped a spring on the lid, sending the raccoon tail flying in the air and the newsmen into a hasty retreat.
