Former NASA suit technician Joe Schmitt died on September 25 at the age of 101. Schmitt is seen here at left, chatting with Alan Shepard a few days before the first US manned spaceflight. In the center is Gus Grissom.

A good choice of photo of Joe Schmitt this week Ed. Amazing he lived to be over 100 years old.

An interesting chapter of him in the book "Apollo Moon Missions: The Unsung Heroes" by Billy Watkins and several references to him, of course, in "The Unbroken Chain" by Pad Leader Guenter Wendt and Russell Still.

Really cool photo, very apt for the week that's in it. I can't imagine myself being in any way as relaxed as the three guys seem to be so close to the launch! Thanks Ed.

I was really hoping that your picture of the week would show Joe Schmitt. Thanks for the tribute to a legend of the early days of space exploration... and thanks for showing an image I had not seen before.

Lovely tribute. Wish I could hear the conversation between the three of them.
