Apollo-Saturn 203, the second in the Saturn-1B development mission series, was launched from the Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 37 at 10:53 a.m., July 5, 1966. AS-203 carried 20,000 lbs. of liquid hydrogen into space for investigation of the fuel's behavioral characteristics. This photo was made by the USAF/Northrop-Nortronics ALOTS (Airborne Lightweight Optical Tracking System) installed in a Boeing C-135 aircraft. White sheath over the S-IVB second stage is the vehicle's shock wave and resultant condensation of moist air. Note another shock wave visible as a faint white streak at a near-right angle from the bottom of the second stage. Circular glare surrounding the engine section is caused by glare within the ALOTS lens. |

Nice shot Ed!I remember seeing a black and white video clip of the liquid sloshing around the inside of the tank. I seem to recall the interior was painted in black and white sections of specific sizes that allowed engineers to determine the directions the liquid was sloshing and the rate at which it flowed. |

Yeah, that's a great shot. Same plane must have taken the film of launch from the pad through staging. |
