Shuttle Atlantis rolls out to launch pad 39A on January 25, 1990, after the shortest stay in the Vehicle Assembly Building since the Return-to-Flight. Atlantis was being prepared for mission STS-36.

One of my favourite flights for that quite eerie crew litho and my vote for best program patch. Thanks Ed.

They stole their patch from Scott Air Packs. All they did was add their names and the shuttle to it. Same colors and everything.

Lovely photograph, makes me yearn for those days. I love the patch as well, very patriotic, although I have others as my favourites.

If I recall correctly, one flight director deemed STS-36 "the most important shuttle mission ever flown."

Not for me to judge (Australian and all that) but that seems a little strange for NASA to have given the 36 patch the pass through.

Now why do I have a bell ringing inside my head that this very issue has been discussed before?

Dates back a few years, Ron.

Just did an hour looking into this. Appears as though this logo dates back many years before STS-36. Wonder if the air packs had anything to do with the mission itself and permission was granted to employ it? Be nice to know. Don't wish to derail this any further (sorry Ed) but stir up my interest and often I can't let go.

All times are CT (US)
