Apollo 1 command pilot Gus Grissom leaves the transfer van at the base of Launch Complex 34 on the fatal date of January 27, 1967, fifty years ago. Grissom is followed by pilot Roger Chaffee. Senior pilot Ed White waits his turn in the van.

How very thoughtful of you Ed to post your Photo of the Week to commemorate the actual day 50 years on from that tragic event.

I can still recall the special news bulletin on TV that announced this tragedy. I was only a teenager, but I had been following the space race very closely. I was devastated! Still am.

Thanks for the photo Ed!
