STS-6 mission specialist Story Musgrave floats above Challenger's cargo bay during the first EVA of the Space Shuttle program on April 7, 1983. Musgrave and fellow crewmember Don Peterson worked outside for 4 hours and 17 minutes, testing spacesuits, tools and techniques for future spacewalks. |

Story sent me an autographed photo a long time ago and he signed his name upside down, now I know why. |

I've had a few people sign upside-down, sometimes they just don't care and sign it as immediately presented to them, or as in LeBron's case just to be mean. I would even venture to say that with Story, as when I met him in person, and with TV camera rolling (not live), he even denied whom he was. Go figure. |

Story's upside-down signatures are somewhat his trademark. It goes hand in hand with his stories about the benefits of flying in space. For example, from a 1996 reply to a question posed through Ask An Astronaut: ...zero gravity does give you the opportunity to do things in a different orientation. You can go to the bathroom upside down, you can hook your toes to the top of the bathroom, and do things that way. And so that's one of the opportunities you have up there, that would be kind of disastrous down here. Here he is signing a door at the former Rocket Town: |

The prelude to my story regarding Story's upside down signature is actually quite entertaining. I was at the STS-80 crew walkout and took a nice photo of him as he walked out of O&C building. Afterward I noticed his name tag, which only read "Story" was upside down. Prior to the mission NASA "suggested" that he should retire because of his age. He was not happy about it. Shortly after that NASA announced that John Glenn, who was older than Story, had been selected to fly on the Shuttle. I asked Story if he wore his name tag upside in protest of his forced retirement, he just laughed and said "no, I wore it like that because there's no up or down in space". Good answer! |
