STS-1 backup commander Joe Engle prepares to enter the orbiter Columbia inside the Orbiter Processing Facility at KSC for ejection escape suit testing, to make sure the suit fittings and harnesses are compatible with the spacecraft's ejection seats. Suit tech Joe Schmitt is standing by. The photo was made in October 1979. |

Birthday thought - Age is simply a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.Or to quote John Glenn - Despite the advances in modern medicine there is still no cure for the common birthday. Have a great day from one Ed to another. |

Gelukkige verjaardag Ed!!! Take a great start orbiting the Sun for the 61st time...I believe the ejection seats during the first STS missions were the same as used in the Lockheed SR-71. |

Happy Birthday, Ed. Many more! And yes, the ejection seats used on Columbia for the four OFT missions are modified SR-71 Blackbird seats. The brown/gold S1030A suits worn by the astronauts during these flights were all modified from the type used by USAF pilots on the SR-71. Of the eight provided to NASA, only one, John Young's, is intact and is on display at Space Center Houston. The rest were returned to the Air Force and components recycled or destroyed. |
