Bill Fisher sits on the middeck of Space Shuttle Discovery as he waits for launch of mission STS-51I in August 1985. Actually he is lying on his back. The photo was taken from the flight deck, where the rest of the crew was seated. |

Always a bit more leg room sitting by the emergency exit. And a window seat to boot! |

Sitting next to the hatch wouldn't make for a relaxing launch when you know that's all that separates you from the outside. |

Perhaps he's in the 'naughty corner' because of something he said. |

Ask someone to picture launching or re-entering on the shuttle and I think almost everyone would picture themselves on the flight deck with a great view of everything that was going on.I don't think the general public were even aware that some of the crew were seated in a virtually windowless room staring at a wall of storage lockers with only the radio link to tell them what was happening. |

And hope the person locked those lockers good or else you will find out the hard way. |

Never mind the lockers - "Is it my imagination or is the hatch handle moving out of the locked position?" |
