Bill Fisher sits on the middeck of Space Shuttle Discovery as he waits for launch of mission STS-51I in August 1985. Actually he is lying on his back. The photo was taken from the flight deck, where the rest of the crew was seated.

Always a bit more leg room sitting by the emergency exit. And a window seat to boot!

Sitting next to the hatch wouldn't make for a relaxing launch when you know that's all that separates you from the outside.

Perhaps he's in the 'naughty corner' because of something he said.

Ask someone to picture launching or re-entering on the shuttle and I think almost everyone would picture themselves on the flight deck with a great view of everything that was going on.

I don't think the general public were even aware that some of the crew were seated in a virtually windowless room staring at a wall of storage lockers with only the radio link to tell them what was happening.

Never mind the lockers - "Is it my imagination or is the hatch handle moving out of the locked position?"

All times are CT (US)
