STS-41B mission specialist Bob Stewart is seated behind Challenger pilots Vance Brand and Hoot Gibson, shortly after arriving on orbit in February 1984. An ascent checklist floats in front of him. Ron McNair can be seen behind Stewart. The photo was taken by Bruce McCandless from the opening between the flight-deck and the mid-deck.

I followed this mission with great interest, as much as I could before I had a satellite dish. Bruce McCandless had been waiting to fly in space since 1966, but got to use the AMU on its first free flight. And both PAM rocket motors blew up when they ignited to boost their commercial satellites to high orbit. And the first KSC landing. It was exciting to watch!

Both PAM motors actually shut down right after ignition... allowing them to be captured and returned to Earth on STS-51A.

Another great photo! Yes, the great days of spaceflight with the shuttle program showing its stride!
