STS-33 crewmembers walk out of the Operations and Checkout Building to the waiting Astrovan, which will take them to Launch Pad 39B to participate in the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test aboard Discovery on October 30, 1989. From left are: mission specialist Kathy Thornton, MS Sonny Carter (behind Thornton), commander Fred Gregory, MS Story Musgrave (in background) and pilot John Blaha. |

Ed, I'm guessing the hats chosen had something to do with their particular astronaut group?Thornton and Carter (both Group 10) are wearing the same hat, whereas the others are different (Group 6, 8 and 9). |

The photo caption does not offer any explanation. In other photos later that day some crewmembers pose with a Jack-o'-lantern in the white room. |
