This view of Discovery's launch on STS-26 was taken by an airline passenger bound for Paradise Island in the Bahamas. She sent the photo of what she called "the most beautiful sight this side of Heaven" to NASA, along with a congratulatory letter. STS-26 was the Return-To-Flight in September 1988 after the Challenger accident.

An excellent shot. For me, I remember visiting the Kennedy Space Centre and seeing the Shuttle on the launch pad, but sadly missed the launch as we had booked a trip to the Keys and the Bahamas!

That's an awesome shot! I'd be curious if anyone knows the approximate distance from the plane to the shuttle. I'm not familiar with the airspace restrictions during a launch, but this seems awfully close for a commercial jetliner. But perhaps the distance in the photo is a bit deceiving.

I had a similar experience but cannot name the date or STS flight # (Possibly a January launch FWIW).

Was leaving West Palm Beach for Chicago on an atypical Western departure (as winds are most prevalent out of East or off the ocean) as we turned North the Captain alerted the cabin to look out the right side of the a/c. This could not have been planned better!

As we passed by the Cape a few minutes later you could clearly see the exhaust plume leading right down to the pad. Awesome.

All times are CT (US)
