STS-61 mission specialist Story Musgrave is seen performing an EVA on December 7, 1993, during which the Wide Field/Planetary Camera of the Hubble Space Telescope was replaced. In the background is Musgrave's fellow-spacewalker Jeff Hoffman, with part of the HST visible behind him.

This mission fixed Hubble, which was great for astronomy, and, according to statements attributed to then NASA Administrator Goldin, "saved" NASA. Not bad STS-61 crew!

The shuttle era will only be remembered because of the Hubble Space Telescope!

Or perhaps it cost the lives of 14 astronauts.

The Hubble repair was indeed a great success but the enormous running costs of the Shuttle outweighed the practical uses for in-orbit satellite repairs and recoveries.

I believe Hubble cost something like $1.5 billion to launch (this is excluding the cost of fixes and later interventions) and Shuttle missions cost on the order of $450 million a piece, so by a very crude calculation you could have launched a brand new HST for the cost of just three Shuttle missions.

Yes, but are you factoring in the need for a shuttle-class launch vehicle to deploy each new Hubble?

Building Hubble was quite the challenge. It is a one-of-a-kind design that took the better part of a decade to build. Possibly, a replacement Hubble meant no science until the 21st century — for a project that originated in the mid-70's. On the other hand, Hubble was repaired three and a half years after launching in 1990.

Story is no doubt (in my opinion) the finest Shuttle era astronaut. This is a terrific photo Ed, thanks for sharing.

I used to skydive with Story Musgrave at Lakewood, New Jersey. He is one cool guy.

Here is a panoramic view of Endeavour also taken on EVA-3. That is Story Musgrave in the payload bay.

The photo description I have indicates this POTW is an EVA-1 photo, which was on December 5, 1993. But number "931207 094745 STS61 V50 94 006" is on the frame, so the National Archives caption is probably incorrect.
