The X-15 is trucked back to the Flight Research Center after Forrest Petersen's emergency landing at Mud Lake in January 1962. The XLR-99 in X-15 no. 1 had two malfunction shutdowns during the first 3.3 seconds after ignition. |

Jim McDivitt was a chase pilot on that flight. Interesting bit of trivia: Michael Collins was a chase pilot on Neil Armstrong's final X-15 flight in July 1962. |

I can hear the "DING DING" sound and the look on the attendant's face as he looks up from his newspaper. |

Gee, I'm embarrassed. The first thing my eye caught was the Chevron station. I spent a few years working for them and I guess I'll always be a Chevroid. But another great picture Ed! |

I cannot even begin to image what the attendant must have thought when he saw that tractor-trailer with an X-15 stopping there! Just think of those in traffic with it! |

It's not apparent whether there was a security vehicle(s) escort for the truck and X-15 payload. Those were different times than today I guess. |

"Fillerup with liquid oxygen and ammonia please."So you're sitting in a diner across the street and see the X-15 stop at the gas station. How cool would that be? |

Ironically, aside from taxiing tests, the X-15 set the record for the slowest airplane on this day.... |

Also, humorously, it looks like there are some birds sitting on the edge of the Chevron roof overhang just above the cab. Can you imagine their conversation?!!! |

With that tarp in place, at least the attendant didn't have to worry about cleaning the windshield. |

I've often wondered about the discolored splotches on the skin of X-15 #1 hanging in the NASM! |

The whole rig has quite the potential for a hell of a speeding ticket.Trooper: You know what the speed limit is on this stretch of the highway? Driver/Pilot: Yes, sir. It's 70 mph. Trooper: And do you know how fast I clocked you going? Driver/ Pilot: [hesitatingly] 4,520 MPH? |
