Fifty years ago this week, John Young winked at photographer Ralph Morse as he walked up the ramp to the elevator at Pad 19, followed by Gus Grissom. The Gemini 3 crew boarded their spacecraft several minutes later and launch took place at 9:24 am EST on March 23, 1965. |

Great photo choice, Ed, of Gemini's first manned crew at the pad on launch morning. After seeing this picture of Grissom and Young so many times in the past, I never did notice beforehand that Young was winking at photographer Ralph Morse. What an exciting day that had to be in our nation's spaceflight history -- fifty years ago this week! |

Great photo and the start of John Young's amazing space career! Just wondering though, where has he concealed his corned beef sandwich probably in one of his leg pouches? |

What an exciting time — always a manned launch on the horizon. Great photo. |

Perhaps the best photo of the week I can remember, best reason to visit this website. Keep up the good work Mr. Hengeveld. |

I have read the sandwich came from a leg pouch and it seems both pouches are quite full in this photo, so I think we're looking directly at a famous item from Wolfie's deli! Very cool. |

Just thinking how ironic this photo is...it is the first and last "launch day photo" for them. |

Thanks Gary, I believe I read somewhere that the sandwich was purchased by Wally Schirra at the request of John Young at his favourite sandwich bar — Wolfies Deli! |

The sandwich has been preserved for posterity, and in honor of deli menus everywhere, at the Grissom Memorial Museum in Indiana. |

I don't think this can be "the" sandwich. Grissom is said to have taken a bite and immediately became concerned about floating crumbs. Part of the beef that ensued (no pun intended) involved the corruption of biomedical data as a result of consuming a portion of the sandwich. |

No, it is not the flown sandwich; it is only a commemorative corned beef (as noted in the caption to our article today). That said, the remnants of real sandwich was rumored to have also been encased before landing on John Young's desk at NASA, where it sat for decades. |

Notice the white Gemini spacecraft on the blue hard hats in the crowd. I think they are McDonnell workers. |
