Fifty years ago this week, these five astronauts were observing activities in Mission Control at Cape Kennedy during the successful unmanned Gemini 2 test flight on January 19, 1965. Left to right are: Gene Cernan, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, Deke Slayton and Gus Grissom. Cernan was assigned the 'Tanks' position for this flight, monitoring fuel pressures for the Titan II launch vehicle. |

Interesting - I didn't know that astronauts ever sat and really worked at any console besides Capcom. Can anyone think of other examples? |

It's unclear to me whether the astronauts are observing, acting as back up or working as the prime controller for some function (in either photo). Ed? Thanks. |

Wasn't the "Tanks" position the only non-Flight Director position that could communicate directly with the Capcom or crew and call for an abort? I also believe the Tanks chair was always occupied by an astronaut and was vacated once the second stage shut down. |

In the Apollo 12 photo, Worden is Capcom for the CM pilot, while Lovell and Haise are observing. In the Gemini 2 photo we know from his book that Cernan was 'Tanks', but Cooper looks busy also. No idea what his role was. |
