A four-day test of the Mobile Quarantine Facility that would house the Apollo 11 astronauts after their return to earth was performed onboard the USS Guadalcanal in March 1969, in conjunction with the Apollo 9 recovery. The test was supervised by Dr. Bill Carpentier. The other participants are shown here. Standing is MQF technician John Hirasaki. At left are Paul Kruppenbacher (top) and Texas Ward, at right is Arthur Lizza.

Ed - are you sure you have this printed the right way round? I know of another location where this is reversed, i.e. the double occupied bunks on the right.

Yes, this is the correct orientation. I am always very keen on this sort of thing. My clue was Hirasaki's breast pocket. It seems to be in the usual place. The confirmation is another photo of him standing next to an instrument panel with text labels.

The Apollo Navy guys would have felt right at home.

I agree with Ed about the way the photo is shown. As well as his comments, the fellow on the bottom left-hand bunk is wearing his watch on his left wrist (as do most right-handed people), and his wedding ring is on his third finger left. There are probably more clues that would show up in a higher-res version.

With the research he puts into his books, he IS a detective!

This photo just makes me realize all of the work that went into Apollo. So much had to be tested, and it all had to work right to get 3 men home.

I think Ed would agree with me that after years of receiving a small number of photos printed backwards from NASA, and many others mislabelled, you have to have a bit of detective about you. There are so many early photos - particularly Mercury era - that say a certain photo was taken on launch day, but you see people wearing three different shirts, or someone that you know wasn't there on launch day (such as Al Rochford on Scott Carpenter's launch day - he was in another state about to get married). I'm sure JL out at Retro Space Images has torn his hair out many times trying to identify when a certain photo was actually taken, rather than believe the accompanying NASA caption.

Colin is absolutely right. I think I would be a better NASA archivist than the NASA archivists.

NASA archivist isn't nearly as prestigious as collectSPACE archivist.

All times are CT (US)
