Apollo 2 astronauts Jim McDivitt, Dave Scott and Rusty Schweickart (right to left) pose with spacecraft 101 command module during crew compartment stowage review at North American Aviation in Downey, California, on December 13, 1966. I always had the feeling this NASA photo was retouched, because the command module hatch looks a bit strange. This was confirmed when I found the same photo as it was released by NAA, which is the unretouched version. |

Great to see the Russians weren't the only photo-retouchers |

Now that is really interesting. Why would they possibly feel the need to edit the photo? |

How would they do it back then? No Photoshop then. |

Why would they edit? Because of the man behind Dave Scott pulling his (Dave Scott's) right ear... |

How would they edit? Using a brush. They've been editing photos since at least the 1860s. |

Ed - are there any other examples of NASA edited photos from the early manned program? I understand how it was done, it is still just strange that it was felt necessary. |

As can be seen in their original form, a couple of shots from Apollo 16 required later retouching.

I know of an early Apollo 7 crew photo where a similar thing was done to a background that was probably deemed not 'photogenic' enough. But I don't have the retouched version anymore.
