Chase planes fly over the M2-F3 lifting body after its final flight on December 20, 1972. It was the highest flight for the vehicle. Pilot John Manke is at right.

Great to see another lifting body photo honoring shuttle precursors. And I love that low-tech access ladder the ground crew pressed into service

What would you give to have been standing there back then? Super shot, any idea who the photographer was? Just wondering if they gave these guys any credits.

What a great shot! What I like is here is the pilot and support crew flying/standing by the latest in technology/aerodynamics. But like true aviators they stop and watch flying aircraft go by. The love never dies!

Unfortunately NASA photographers were not identified in those early days.

Absolutely! Great photo Ed.

Was sitting on the back porch the other day and heard a whirlybird approaching. Went out into the yard to find a tandem-rotor Chinook slowly cruise on by. Not cutting edge tech but beautiful nonetheless.

Great lifting body photo Ed! John Manke was one of the best. He was also very nice to us autograph hounds.
