Dr. Kurt Debus, director of the Kennedy Space Center, signs the last major beam autographed by construction workers, NASA, and Corps of Engineers employees to be installed during the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) topping-off ceremony on April 14, 1965.

An absolutely awesome shot! Is this beam visible today? I wonder if anyone's got a photo of it post-installation and what it might look like today.

I greatly enjoy the variety of the photos in this series. Not that only shots taken in space during missions would get boring, but the Earthbound ones showing training and other events really give us a better sense of NASA's history.

Is that the good side or not so good side of Dr. Debus? Hint; he had a scar on one side of his face that I've been told by a former NASA employee that he was proud of, as it was an old war wound.

That's the scarred side, it's below his lip going across towards his cheek.

Great shot Ed, I'd love to know if this is visible as well.

Thanks LM-12, I guess as it's way up in the gods, it may now be covered with fireproof materials and cladding now.

Looks like he signed it twice. This photo is dated May 13, 1965.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if that May date is incorrect, but he is signing the beam in a different location.

Some great 1965 footage of the VAB and the topping off ceremony from Mark Gray at Spacecraft Films. The beam can also be seen near Hangar S.

All times are CT (US)
