Apollo 15 commander Dave Scott talks with LIFE photographer Ralph Morse, before posing for photos in April 1971. Morse followed the astronauts everywhere in the 1960s and many famous NASA photos were actually taken by him.

Morse, using the camera in his hand and three mirrors. The man was good.

Steve - do you have any more on the 3-mirrors story? Ralph appears to be holding the camera on the left side, far away from the shutter release on the right. There appears to be no cable or remote release attached.

The camera is the legendary Nikon F. It appears to have the Photomic Ft viewfinder and 50mm lens.

I think Steve was joking. No doubt Morse had an assistant with him that day. Or perhaps Scott's wife took the photo...

Hey Gary, I've got a bridge up in Brooklyn that I can make you a good deal on.

By the way, I agree the camera is a Nikon F but I don't think it's got a Photomic FTN finder on it.

I sort of thought Gary was being a bit sarcastic too, but that may be just my take on it.

Anyway, great picture!

Guilty! I believe the line is hook, line and sinker.

Joel the Ft predates the Ftn.

Was this taken in El Lago subdivision or Timber Cove?

Gary, sorry for doubting your knowledge on Nikon's historical camera production, especially after reading the dissertation you sent me.

Who took the picture? Mirrors? Boots? What kind of camera? Where was the photo taken? Too many questions. This pic has obviously been faked.

I think the answer is simple. Per above, someone with another camera - an assistant, friend, wife, whatever - shot a candid snap of Ralph and David.

"Wait. So Apollo 15 was actually cancelled last year and your mission is actually Apollo 16. But we're calling it Apollo 15..."
