About four hours after the Gemini 9 launch on June 3, 1966, astronauts Stafford and Cernan caught their first glimpse of the ATDA docking target as a ghostly silhouette against a black space background. The nose cone which failed to separate made the vehicle look like an 'angry alligator', as Stafford put it.

That has a graphic signature akin to 2001, a Space Odyssey

I, too, delight in this Saturday morning ritual. As an exercice of historical recall and inference, I make a point of interpreting the picture before reading any details...
