This photo shows five of the men who are responsible for many of the great NASA images that document the US manned space program. This is the JSC Photography Group in 2000. Front row (l-r): James Blair, Mark Sowa (Supervisor); back row (l-r): Benny Benavides, Bill Stafford and Robert Markowitz. Benavides was from the original group of NASA photographers that arrived in 1962 and has since retired. The rest of the staff is still at JSC. Blair, Sowa and Markowitz are holding the Kodak DCS 760 digital camera which was built on a Nikon F5 platform. It was the standard digital camera used at the time. Stafford is holding a Kodak DCS 520 camera (built on a Canon platform) and Benavides is holding his Hasselblad 503cx camera, which was the primary film camera then. Thank you, gentlemen! Ed - I've enjoyed both photography and spaceflight for nearly 50 years (gulp). Thanks for this great photo. |

It's great to see some of the behind the scene folks. I'd love to see more if you have any. Thanks! |

I wouldn't mind borrowing one of those cameras for a few weeks. Makes my Nikon SLR look like a toy you get in a McDonalds happy meal. Great photo! |

Cool. How does one become a NASA photographer? |
