These four US Navy pilots set five Phantom F4H-1 time-to-climb records at Naval Air Station Brunswick, Maine, in early 1962. Top to bottom are Lieutenant Colonel William C. McGraw, Commander David M. Longton, Lieutenant Commander Del W. Nordberg and Lieutenant Commander John W. Young. On February 21, 1962, Young climbed to 3,000 meters in 34.52 seconds. Six months later he was selected as a NASA astronaut. Ed Hengeveld |

Great photo Ed. I once read that early on in the space program when NASA was trying to work out what aircraft to obtain for astronaut flying, Pete Conrad was pushing for the F4 before they decided on the T-38 on the basis of cost and complexity of maintenance for the F4. I'll bet John Young was also pushing for the F4!! It would have looked great in NASA livery. |

Now I understand why John Young always wears turtle necks. Being stationed in Brunswick, Maine...you need them 3/4 of the year to keep warm. |

Thanks Ed for another great photo! Now that I'm a Mainer I enjoy learning about Maine's aviation/space history. Hint; only people visiting Maine wear turtle necks 3/4 of the time. |

Anyone know if the F4H-1 obtained the time to climb records carrying a payload or was it flying clean without a payload? Just curious.Great photo. |

You're right. It doesn't stay warm enough for the Mainards to have time to take off their plaid mackinaws to put on turtlenecks. |

Is there any special Yuri Gagarin photo to commemorate 50 years ago April 12? |
