The second group of US astronauts pose for the lens of LIFE photographer Ralph Morse in 1962. Sure beats today's Photoshop-portraits.

When the "New Nine" really were new...Thanks for posting that, Ed.

I don't recall ever seeing a group portrait of those gentlemen outside of LIFE.

The best Group selected, in my view.

I agree with Ed, Photoshopped pictures suck.

The most accomplished, without a doubt.

Lovell folded his arms wrong. But I love McDivitt's facial expression. Priceless.

Some of them have name tags; others don't. But they all have their zippers down to the exact spot. I wonder if Neil had any idea what was in store for him?

I guess all of Young's white T-shirts were at the laundry that day!

Thanks Ed! Another gem! I've never seen that one before!

Doug, just a small point with Lovell folding his arms the wrong way, It's easily done when your left handed.

Years ago when I played cricket we had a team photo taken. You could tell who the left handers (4 of them) where in the photo.

By the way, cracking photo Ed...

According to Grissom in Gemini, Young did not like long underwear, and used to cut the sleeves off his long johns before donning his PGA. Maybe he didn't like t-shirts either.

I think the arms folded pose looks a little strange and unnatural. But I love Stafford's "thumps up" look. I wonder if it was intentional or just random?

I didn't know this, but I just tried it and you are absolutely correct. Learn something new everyday!

I agree with all of you; this is a great photo. Thanks Ed.

OK, you people are really messing with me now...

When I fold my arms reflexively, without thinking about it, my left fingers are out, and right are under my shoulder. Doing it the opposite way requires actual concentration, and is completely unnatural for me. Like Lovell, my right forearm naturally goes to the outside...But I'm right-handed. Am I a freak, or what? I never gave any thought to this at all until now...

I don't think it's so much a priceless expression as it is "he blinked". We may not like Photoshop (some of us do, actually), but it would have fixed those closed eyes.

I think it's an outstanding photo. I love the arms folded. They look real confident. The teams I've been with the photographer always told us to fold our arms.

Great shot Ed, first time I have seen the "proper" shot. Do you have the wonderful one from the same session where they are goofing around the Gemini model?

Like the Mercury 7, the Second Group should all be known by all space collectors. Can you name all 9 without looking on Wikipedia?
