Four T-38 jets prepare to assume the 'missing man' formation prior to an overflight of Ellington Field near JSC for the memorial service for astronaut Patricia Hilliard Robertson on May 29, 2001.

Does anyone know who the pilots were for the T-38's? Does it include any astronauts?

The first I've ever heard about Dr. Patricia Hilliard Robertson.

Another example of how these 'History Photo of the Week' offerings, can open your eyes.

Thanks for posting.

Patricia Robertson had not yet been assigned to a flight. That is why her name does not appear on 'The Wall' at KSC.

I do not believe Patricia Hilliard Robertson's lack of a flight assignment is why she is missing from the Space Mirror Memorial.

Like Ed Givens, her absence seems to be attributed to her death being while "off-duty" (though it is debatable if Givens was off-duty at the time of his death).

Robertson died as a result of severe injuries sustained from a crash while flying as the instructor/passenger in a Gideon Wittman Tailwind W8 experimental, amateur-built airplane that also took the life of the pilot/owner of the plane.

For reasons never made entirely clear, the Astronaut Memorial Foundation, which administers the Space Mirror at Kennedy Space Center, only honors astronauts who died while on active duty to the program.

Maybe we should start a campaign to get her name put on?

My knowledge is, that she did not complete her training to become an astronaut, Givens had. So that might be the reason that her name does not appear on 'The Wall' at KSC.

Those jets look so graceful they almost look like birds in flight.

She had completed ASCAN training at the time of her death, and was a member of the Expedition 2 support crew which was in progress at the time as well.

Robertson died on May 24, 2001. As Ed notes in his original post, the memorial service was held five days later.
